Transforming Lives Through Para Sport in Bangladesh
At the National Paralympic Committee of Bangladesh (NPC Bangladesh), we believe that sport is more than just competition it is a powerful catalyst for social change. Our mission is to drive long-lasting, structural, and systemic improvements in the lives of persons with disabilities across Bangladesh through the Paralympic Movement.
Grounded in Global and National Standards
Our Impact Strategy is aligned with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We adopt the social model of disability, focusing on removing societal barriers rather than focusing on "limitations." By doing so, we aim to show how NPC Bangladesh’s activities contribute to a world where disability does not dictate a person’s potential.
Our Strategic Focus
By measuring and demonstrating the legacy of our athletes and our participation in the Paralympic Games, we aim to:
- Empower Athletes: Providing the training, resources, and platforms for Bangladeshi Para athletes to excel on the world stage.
- Advocate for Inclusion: Partnering with government bodies, NGOs, and like-minded institutions to focus national attention on the systemic changes required for disability inclusion in Bangladesh.
- Challenge Perceptions: Using the excellence of our athletes to change the way the Bangladeshi public views disability moving from sympathy to empowerment.
- Strengthen the Movement: Supporting local clubs and regional organizations to build a sustainable grassroots foundation for Para sports across all districts.
Driving Change Beyond the Field
We don't just measure success by medals, but by the lives changed off the field. NPC Bangladesh advocates for accessible infrastructure, inclusive education, and equal employment opportunities. We work tirelessly to ensure that the "Paralympic Effect" reaches every corner of the country, from the capital to the most rural communities.
Challenges
Resource constraints: Funding, training facilities, adaptive equipment, travel support for para-athletes are supported by NPC Bangladesh. However, there is a significant constraint of resources in Bangladesh compared to more developed systems.
Classification & technical infrastructure: Ensuring athletes are correctly classified, coaches and officials are trained, and that national competitions follow international standards.
Awareness & societal perceptions: In many societies, including Bangladesh, persons with disabilities face stigma and fewer opportunities. Creating awareness that para-sport is serious, competitive, and empowers people is a key task.
Talent identification & retention: Finding persons with disabilities who wish to engage in competitive sport, giving them pathways, supporting them long-term.
International competitiveness: Moving from participation to competitive performance (medalling) requires long-term investment, high-performance coaching, international exposure.
Data & reporting: The publicly available data on NPC Bangladesh’s activities, athlete lists, competition results is limited — for governance, sponsorship, and transparency, better documentation is beneficial.
