Para Archery Classification

16 Jan 2026

Classification is a fundamental part of Para Archery that ensures fair and equal competition for all athletes. It is the formal process of assessing an athlete’s impairment to determine their eligibility and to group them according to the impact their impairment has on archery performance. By categorizing athletes with similar activity limitations together, the system ensures that at the heart of the Paralympic Movement, it is the athlete’s skill, fitness, and focus that determine the winner—not the degree of their disability.

How Classification Works

The Para Archery classification system serves three primary purposes:

  • Determining Eligibility: Assessing if an athlete has an eligible impairment type to compete.
  • Grouping Athletes: Placing athletes into specific competition classes (such as W1 or Open) based on the severity of their impairment to maintain a balanced field.
  • Assistive Devices: Defining whether an athlete is permitted to use specific assistive equipment (such as stools, wheelchairs, or release aids) during competition.

National and International Standards

In alignment with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and World Archery standards, classification is conducted at both the national level for domestic events and the international level for global representation. It is important to note that while an athlete may be classified to use an assistive device for support, they must meet specific criteria to be eligible for Para Archery competition.
