Para Badminton Classification
16 Jan 2026
At the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) of Bangladesh, we are committed to providing a level playing field for all Para Badminton athletes. Classification is the essential process that groups athletes into specific Sport Classes based on how their impairment affects their badminton movements. This ensures that success is determined by skill, fitness, and strategy rather than the level of impairment.
The Classification Process
The process is conducted by certified BWF (Badminton World Federation) classifiers and consists of two main parts:
- Medical Examination: A review of the athlete's medical records and a physical assessment.
- On-Court Assessment: The athlete performs specific badminton movements and shots to show the classifiers their range of motion and technical ability.
Upon completion, players are assigned a Sport Class and a Sport Class Status (which tells you when your next evaluation is needed).
BWF Para Badminton Sport Classes
Athletes in Bangladesh can compete in one of the following six international classes:
♿ Wheelchair Classes
- WH 1: For players with impairments in both lower limbs and trunk function. A wheelchair is required.
- WH 2: For players with impairments in one or both lower limbs but minimal or no impairment of the trunk.
🏸 Standing Classes
- SL 3 (Standing Lower): Players must play standing and have a significant impairment in one or both lower limbs, often affecting balance.
- SL 4 (Standing Lower): Players have a lesser impairment compared to SL 3, with minimal impairment in walking or running balance.
- SU 5 (Standing Upper): Players have an impairment of the upper limbs (playing or non-playing arm).
🧍 Short Stature Class
- SH 6: For athletes who have a short stature due to a genetic condition (often referred to as dwarfism).
